Recursion Pharmaceuticals ($RXRX): A Deep Dive into Why This Platform Bet Is My Highest-Conviction Position in AI + Biology

I’ve been going deep on the AI + biology space for months. After comparing different approaches, teams, data moats, and clinical progress, Recursion, ticker symbol $RXRX stands out as the one I’m most excited to build a significant position in. This is a platform and operating system bet with the potential to become a category-defining company for the next decade and beyond.
Here is my detailed thinking.
The Core Thesis: An Industrial Operating System for Biology
Recursion is building what they call the Recursion OS, a closed-loop system that integrates automated biology labs, massive proprietary multimodal data, advanced AI models, and chemistry capabilities.
They generate petabyte-scale data from millions of automated cellular experiments per week using high-throughput imaging (“cell painting”) and other assays. AI models learn the “embedding space” of biology, essentially learning how different perturbations (genetic or chemical) change cellular phenotypes. This allows them to map relationships between diseases, targets, and compounds in ways traditional methods cannot.
The 2024/2025 merger with Exscientia added powerful generative chemistry and precision design tools. This gives Recursion a true end-to-end platform: from target identification to molecule optimization to clinical candidates.
This is fundamentally different from traditional pharma or most biotech companies. Recursion is building a scalable system that can be applied across hundreds of diseases. (Not a bet on one or two drugs).
Scientific Edge and Clinical Progress
The phenomics approach is particularly powerful because it is hypothesis-agnostic. Instead of starting with a preconceived target, the system can discover unexpected relationships by observing how cells respond.
Recent clinical milestones are encouraging. REC-4881 (a MEK inhibitor identified by the platform for familial adenomatous polyposis) showed positive Phase 2 proof-of-concept data with meaningful polyp reduction. They have multiple other programs advancing in oncology and rare diseases, plus active partnerships with Roche, Sanofi, Bayer, and others that provide validation and milestones.
The platform has already demonstrated it can identify novel uses for existing compounds and generate new candidates faster and cheaper than traditional methods.
Why Platform > Binary Bets
Compare this to binary pharma companies like ImmunityBio. Those are essentially single-asset or narrow-pipeline bets. One clinical failure can destroy most of the value. Recursion’s platform gives multiple shots on goal, continuous learning, and the ability to iterate rapidly. It is disease-agnostic and future-agnostic & can pivot to whatever biology reveals as important, including longevity pathways.
This is why I’m comfortable adding monthly and building the position even though the risk is “high”. Frontier platforms have the potential for 10–20x+ returns if they succeed.
Risk and Reality Check
This is still very early. Clinical attrition is high in biotech. Execution risk on a platform this ambitious is high. Cash runway is solid into 2028, but dilution is always a possibility if progress slows.
I’m fully prepared for parts of this to not work out. That’s the nature of asymmetric bets. But the upside if the OS becomes the standard way biology is decoded is enormous.

AI capabilities are improving rapidly. Recursion is one of the few public companies with a real scaled platform, clinical progress, and strong team. The field is developing fast, this is still the early innings.
